While looking through my copy of the C.S. Echoes of Glory, I noticed that one of the captions was wrong. It listed a shirt belonging to a A.T. Beam of the "28th" SC Inf. Well, there was no "28th" regiment so I looked for A.T. Beam in the rosters, it turns out he was a member of Co. F of the 23rd S.C. The shirt is on page 154 of EoG.

IIRC, Pvt. Beam was KIA at the Crater. So the Shirt could come from Charleston or Richmond.

You guys need to call me when you post something important dog gone it!

Let me take a look at my copy of EOG and I'll see what I can determine. As far as a shirt pattern... I have several that can be modified. I'll get back to you all this evening.

I just looked at the picture in EoG. I've already made a shirt of that style. That is a simple placket front and a one piece falling collar like the Federal Issue shirt. The question that needs to be answered is what sort of cotton cloth is it made from? Getting the cloth probably won't be hard, the button are available. Although it looks gathered under the shoulder straps, I would surmise that is simply shrinkage of the shoulder strap over time due to the fabric not being pre-shrunk before cutting.

So... I guess I have another project now.

I just found a source for Linsey which is a good fabric for pre-war civilian shirts and jacket linings, as well as Wool Broadcloth for Federal Garments and they even have Jean Cloth too ... http://wmboothdraper.com/

I need to get to Columbia and get a chance to look at some of the collection up there at the SC Military Museum.
