Private Laban Pittman was one of several "deserters" that jumped the train on April 17, 1864 and took the train back to Lancaster. They were promised a 20 day furlough for enlisting for the "war". Not everyone received their furlough. Pittman along with the Deas family left the train at Florence. Twenty days later, they rejoined the Regiment at Wilmington. It is unknown if they received any punishment. The soldiers knew that Virginia was extremely deadly and there was strong chance they would never return. Pittman died four months later and in perspective, I am glad he "took" his furlough, it was probably the last time he saw his wife and children.

28 April 1862: Joins Co. I at Camp Pillow, enlisted by Capt. Steele. for 3 years.

31 July 1862: paid by J. H. Means

Jan./Feb 1863: Sick at Hospital at Columbia, or absent w/o leave.

31 Oct 1863: paid by J. H. means

17 April 1864: Absent without leave for 20 days.

8/2/64 Laban Pittman admitted to CS Hospital, Petersburg, VA. Winder Division # 4

8/18/64 Laban Pitman dies at CS hospital of disease.
