Gentlemen: If you need any help with contacts in the Kinston area, I have some. My gggrandfather was in the 1862 battle there. He was with Mallett's Battalion on the right of the Confederate line while Evan's Brigade was on the left. Lyle Holland is very active in battlefield preservation up there along with Lonnie Blizzard. Bob Tolar (immediate past commanding general of the ANV) lives there and is active as well. There is a small park with interpretive markers near where the Confederate left was anchored. The main part of the battlefield currently has several acres of undeveloped land. We did a small reenactment there several years ago. Walt

Guys: Here is a message I got today from the Kinston Battlefield folks:
Another milestone in our efforts to preserve Kinston/Lenoir County's Civil War heritage was accomplished yesterday. The Historical Preservation Group, Inc. & the Lenoir County Battlefields Commission acquired 3 acres at the Harriette's Chapel site which includes Starr's battery artillery position and 200 feet of the last remaining earthworks from the Dec. 14th, 1862 1st Battle of Kinston. It is located beside, and south of, the two FEMA lots that we have a lease on and on which we have placed a NC Civil War Trials interpretive panel about the battle on the location.

Acquisition of this property was made possible by the generosity of Marshall King (Neuse Sport Shop), and assistance from the Kinston Convention & Visitors Bureau Tourism Development Authority and the Lenoir County Battlefields Commission. Battlefield Commission funding participation was made possible through the public's support of our efforts, ie., 2006 reenactment, the Wil King Antebellum Ball, purchase of 1st Kinston mapsets, Mark Collier's Wyse Fork Battle mapsets, Steve McCall's Wyse Fork Battle prints, and donations.

A Press conference is set for 11:00 am, Monday, Dec. 22 at the K/LC Chamber of Commerce (301 N. Queen St.) and is open to the public. We look forward to seeing there those who can attend.
