Civil War based competitive shooting club forming in Charleston, SC
I have been made the team commander by the N-SSA of the Coastal Rifles a defunct unit they would like to revive here in Charleston, this will be my only attempt to cajole you into another aspect of our hobby please feel free to ask questions here is the web site
www.n-ssa.org for more details
first off it is another aspect of our love of history as most of you know you have a desire to depict the soldier of the civil war in his movements and his camp life and other historical representations, what you dont do is stand in line and actually shoot at something, the N-SSA does not shoot at competitors we shoot at breakable targets to represent our enemy
the difference here is that the emphasis is on the weapon and not the uniform and gear the rules are basically simple you must have a civil war type uniform as set by your team, historical accuracy is preferred certain leeway's can be managed if you do not have the specific items on hand (I can and will go into details if asked) where the rules get picky! you have to shoot a musket that was used during 1861-1865 (reproductions ok and recommended)
Membership has its advantages, ALL members can shoot in any of the regional matches anywhere (see N-SSA schedules online) there are 2 national shoots in Winchester VA every year a spring and fall national, if you sign up with me you get to help find and develop a range here in Charleston or its surrounding area my goal is to have a range within 1 hour of the city (preferably closer)
here are some basic categories that are shot
Musket (all competitors must shoot musket in the beginning it is the basis of the sport and the back bone of the team) SR team members and people who have shot more than 1 season do not have to meet this criteria (local rule, not a national mandate) it also teaches the basic format of the skirmish line
Carbine, this is all carbines except the repeaters (Spencers and Henrys excluded) to include Enfield muzzle loading carbines, the smiths, burnsides, sharps etc etc etc
Pistol simple if it was used during the war it can be used here, 6 shot cap and ball
Repeater here is where you have your Spencers and your Henrys
Smooth Bore here is where your smooth bore muskets are used its a fun category
Mortar, object is to get your mortar balls as close to a stake thats approximately 100 yards out, the team with the lowest variable in distance wins
Cannon simple must be full sized and object is to hit the bullseye at 200 yards team with the highest score wins...
ok on to the skirmish line here are the basics there are 8 competitors per team (musket) you will shoot the following relays targets may be substituted due to local procurement programs, each relay has 5 minutes to complete the board the team with the lowest average time from all the events is the winner..thats the basics
50 yards - 32 clay pigeons on a cardboard backer
50 yards - 16 hanging 4"x4" ceramic tiles
50 yards - 16 hanging clay pigeons
50 yards - 16 hanging clay flower pots
100 yards - 10 hanging 6"x6" ceramic tiles
