In recent weeks I have been researching the Prisoner Records of both Elmira and Pt. Lookout. I have to say looking over the records and seeing the men and boys who died in those aweful places brings the war in new perspective.
Elmira, a.k.a. 'Hell'-mira had some 33 soldiers of the 22nd SC that died while there. The names of those men are listed on my website under the 'Honor Roll of the 22nd SC' and in their respected Companies. Company C looks to have most to have died there with 17. According to one website on the number of dead from Elmira the numbers should be higher, but the records wer either lost or destroyed according to the Author of that site. Below is a site that lists the dead of Elmira.

Point Lookout or Point Hell was in my opinion one the most horrific prisons of either side. It is said that only 25% of the possible 14,102 Confederate dead are buried at the Confederate Cemetery there.

This website seems to go in good detail about the history of the prisoners there.
The 22nd SC had some 17 to died at Pt. Lookout, but of the above information that number should be a lot higher. Maybe much higher than the dead at Elmira?
I have just hit the surface on this fact-finding mission and it looks like it will be a challange...I love good challange.
