I have this Civil War book of lists, that rates the 17th as the 10th best of the Confederate regiments. What actions did the 17thSCI do to be rated as such. I'm assuming the actions at Second Manassas. Of course it is all subjective, I'd like to have your guys thoughts.
Here is the list in the book (top to bottom): 1st Taxas, 4th Virgina, 27th Tennessee, 6th Alabama, 9th Kentucky, 1st Virginia, 4th North Carolina, 44th Georgia, 18th Alabama and then the 17th South Carolina (all are infantry regiments).

Full title: "The Civil War Book of Lists". Compiled by the editors of COMBINED BOOKS. Published by CASTLE BOOKS. ISBN 0-7858-1702-6. I most likely pick it up at the bargain bin. Its 240 pages of (obviously) lists such as:The states in order of proportion of population enlisted in confederate service, The ten worst commanded battles of the war, to The ten best Civil War board games (great section on Gettysburg). It's a good pick-up and put-down kind of book. It leads me to research the "why", or ask more informed people such as your self.
